Clean Out Your Pantry
Does it seem as if your kids are always reaching for junk food? You probably know their snack habit isn't doing them any favors, but kids being kids, you can't seem to get them to shake it.
Dr. William Muinos, the doctor who oversaw the health of the kids on Shaq's Big Challenge, has a news flash for parents: If you fill the pantry with junk, that's what your kid will eat. "You buy the groceries," he says. "You be in control. Change your pantry."
Joy Bauer, R.D., the show's nutrition expert, agrees. She says it's a parent's job to provide wholesome foods, then coach kids to make healthy food decisions. So keep up your end of the deal by clearing out those cupboards and banishing those huge bags of candy, chips, and cookies. Give them away if you don't want to throw them out — just do whatever it takes to get rid of them and make room for the healthy foods that will take their place.
