COMMON SENSE Nutrition Adjustments!

Beat the Bulge
Find Fitter Fast Food
By Denise Austin

As more and more diners become interested in low-fat, low-calorie fare, fast-food restaurants are responding with menu lineups featuring lighter choices. Use the following guidelines to eat healthy on the go!

1. Look for grilled, skinless chicken sandwiches served on a whole-wheat bun. Ask for them without special sauce or mayonnaise, or substitute mustard, ketchup, relish, or barbecue sauce instead.
2. Avoid fried or breaded chicken sandwiches or strips.
3. Order a baked potato without sour cream, butter, or cheese. Top it with fat-free dressing or salsa instead.
4. Ask for a side salad, broth-based soup, or chili instead of fries.
Consider ordering a child-sized meal.
5. Most fast-food restaurants have calorie guides on hand or online. Ask for them to help with ordering smart.
6. Have water or iced tea as a beverage instead of soda.
7. Resist the urge to "upsize" for a few cents more.
8. Remember, low-fat and low-carb doesn't always mean low-calorie.
