6 Ways to Beat Depression
Your diet, how much you exercise, and your stress level all affect depression. So, if you want to beat the blues, you'll need several lines of attack. These tips can help:

1. Develop a variety of ways to manage stress, even when your depression is in remission, such as exercise and meditation.

2. Don't put off treatment for depression. The longer depression persists, the more difficult it is to curb.

3. Take extra steps to minimize heart disease risks, such as eating a low-fat diet.

4. Boost your intake of omega-3 fats — found in fish and other foods.

5. Go out for walks regularly — 30 minutes, at least three times a week.

6. Encourage anyone you know who has suffered a heart attack to undergo a formal psychiatric evaluation. Treatment of depression is part of the new standard treatment for heart attack patients. Last Updated: 09/17/2007
